The hull plug is a metal threaded plug that is screwed into place with allen wrench (hex). The plugs are installed before every flight and removed after every flight.
It is extremely important to ensure that all hull plugs are securely in place before launching the seaplane into flight/water. We say flight because it is rumored that the aircraft may not be insured if the hull plugs are not installed. Plugs are counted and placed in a watertight cup upon removal and counted again when reinstalled. The watertight cup is looped between the two yokes so there is no way to fly the aircraft without removing this safety feature.
When installing the hull plugs it is recommended that you first layout the plugs in the order that they are to be installed. This lets you count the 7 plugs and inspect them before use.
The layout to the right shows the 7 hull plugs in their respective positions with the bow (nose) being in the lower section of the photo and stern (tail) being more to the top.
1 plug is installed on each side of the nose wheel in the bow. 1 plug is installed in the bottom of each wing float sponson. 1 plug is installed just forward of the step. 1 plug is installed aft of the step. And 1 plug is installed in the tail section just forward of the water rudder.
